When returning search results for a given query, Google tries to present the most relevant and highest quality web pages.\u00a0 A high quality web page can improve the search rankings of your page and help attract potential prospects to you via Google and other search engines. \u00a0How does Google assess the quality of your web page?\u00a0 In November 2015, Google released the full version of its search quality rating guidelines in a ~150 page document.\u00a0 These guidelines are given to search quality raters to help them evaluate search engine results from Google\u2019s experiments with search algorithms.\u00a0 Ratings from these human raters are not used to determine actual page rankings but these guidelines provide valuable insights on Google\u2019s approach on the\u00a0assessment of web\u00a0page quality.<\/p>\n

In previous posts, we discussed the importance of on-page factors<\/a>, keyword choice<\/a> and social signals<\/a> in improving search engine rankings.\u00a0 In this article, we highlight key points from Google\u2019s Page Quality ratings guidelines<\/a> (updated as of March 2016) to gain insights on how Google might\u00a0assess the quality of your web page.<\/p>\n

Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) Pages<\/strong><\/p>\n

When assessing the quality of a web page, certain pages are to be held to a higher standard by raters.\u00a0 Pages that may \u201cpotentially impact the future happiness, health, or financial stability of users\u201d\u00a0will\u00a0be classified as \u201cYour Money or Your Life\u201d, or YMYL pages, and subject to \u201cvery high\u201d standards. \u00a0YMYL pages include those which enable shopping or financial transactions or provide medical or legal information etc.\u00a0 Financial information pages with advice or information about retirement planning, investments, taxes, insurance purchase and home purchase will be classified as YMYL pages.<\/p>\n

The Most Important Factors affecting Your Page Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n

The quality of a web page is very much tied to the quality of the web site to which it belongs.\u00a0 The following 4 factors are to be used by raters in assessing web page quality.<\/p>\n

  1. Quality of main content on web page and its amount<\/li>\n
  2. Information on person or organization responsible for the website<\/li>\n
  3. Reputation of website<\/li>\n
  4. Expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness of web page \/ website<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Page quality grades used include \u201cvery high\u201d, \u201chigh\u201d, \u201cmedium\u201d, \u201clow\u201d, or \u201cvery low\u201d. \u00a0 A page which merits neither a high nor low quality rating, or a page which has a mix of convincingly high and mildly low quality characteristics\u00a0may\u00a0be rated\u00a0“medium\u201d.<\/p>\n

    An important measure of page quality is the quality and the amount of main content given the purpose of the page.\u00a0 In assessing content quality, different standards\u00a0are to be\u00a0applied to \u201clarge, professionally-produced business websites\u201d versus \u201csmall amateur, hobbyist or personal websites\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0Further, a page with a broad topic is expected to have more content than one with a narrower topic.<\/p>\n
